Six young individuals, aged between 20 and 26, found themselves remanded to Kirinya Prison following an appearance at the Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Jinja. They face charges related to gross indecency.

Geoffrey Ibanda, Sadic Wassajja, Sadat Menya alias Sheebah, Fabian Kalungi, Hamza Katamba, and Brian Kiiza alias Chosen were apprehended by the Jinja Police a week ago. The allegations suggest their involvement in a purported sexual network, accused of grooming young boys into acts of sodomy and recruiting adults into homosexual practices.

According to the police report, the suspects were apprehended in Mpumudde zone, where they were allegedly recording pornographic content and streaming live sessions. Among the items confiscated were 192 packets of lubricants, attire adorned with LGBTQ logos, and paraphernalia associated with the LGBTQ community.

During the court proceedings, the accused pleaded not guilty and sought bail, citing their constitutional rights. However, the magistrate postponed the decision, insisting on the presence of the State Attorney.

Philip Mutebi, representing Human Rights and Economic Empowerment (HURID), stated their intent to secure a production warrant for the accused before the next court appearance. He emphasized HURID’s commitment to advocating for the rights of marginalized groups and providing legal aid in cases where access to justice is impeded.

This arrest comes in the wake of Parliament’s approval of stringent penalties for individuals promoting homosexuality. The new law, championed by Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, introduces severe penalties, including the death penalty for aggravated homosexuality offenses. It also criminalizes attempted homosexuality, recruiting for same-sex acts, and other related activities, signaling a broader legal crackdown on LGBTQ rights in Uganda.
