Police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have conducted a joint operation and arrested Makidye East Member of Parliament, Derrick Nyeko, and four others for possessing military outfits.

The four others include: Katuruntu Geoffrey, a councillor; Waswa Musoke Hassan, a shop attendant at Costume World tailoring shop and resident of Kimwanyi Zone, Wandegeya Parish, Kawempe Division; Bukenya Joseph, a cleaner at National Unity Platform (NUP) Party President Bobi Wine’s home in Magere and resident of Magere, Kyadondo East County in Wakiso District; and Biiso Marvin, a phone cover seller and resident of Namungoona, Kampala district.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, multiple items that are a preserve of the security forces were recovered from suspects’ homes, offices, and shops.

“After getting a court order, security agencies have initiated an intelligence-led operation, cordoning off offices, residences, shops, and other places where such items may be present. The objectives of this operation include cordoning off areas, conducting searches in targeted premises, collecting all items reserved for security forces, prosecuting suspects found with such items, and restoring order,” Onyango said.

The recovered items, according to Onyango, include desert military shoes, police shoes black in color, an overall appearance resembling that of Counter Terrorism, with the UG flag badge, red berets, red NUP attire accompanied with police ranks, one live PK bullet, four army-look alike trousers, two military-look alike overalls, three army-look alike berets, one walk-tokie branded Alpha Romeo, one military poncho, two military-look alike berets, and six army-like Chevrons.

Others include fake counterfeit dollars of 23 bundles of 20 notes, two toy pistols, one stainless steel curved sharp metal, two military badges branded on the auxiliary police department, seven khaki shirts with star pepes, eight khaki trousers, three dresses with laneyards, one black cape branded with police Nationale wording, and four sewing machines.

Police and the UPDF have severally warned supporters of the NUP against donning attire such as red berets, saying that they are reserved for security forces.

However, the opposition party dismissed the warnings, saying that their attire is clearly labeled with the NUP badge and can therefore be easily differentiated from police and UPDF clothing.

Recently, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament and NUP spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi, accused the security forces of double standards after they took no action against Kitgum District Woman MP, Lilian Aber, and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) spokesperson, Andrew Mwenda, who recorded videos donning UPDF uniforms.

The UPDF spokesperson, Brig. Felix Kulayigye, said that Aber apologized for the mistake and asked for forgiveness from the army.

Meanwhile, Onyango said that the suspects are being processed for court.
