The General Court Martial at Makindye has granted bail to the National Unity Platform (NUP) head of security, Achileo Kivumbi, who has been on remand for the past three months over accusations of possession of military attire.
Achileo pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted a cash bail of Shs 2 million on Monday, October 22, 2024.
According to the charge sheet, “Kivumbi Achileo on the 3rd day of August 2024 at around 1503 hours while at Nansana East II B zone, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso district was found in unlawful possession of 01 pair of Lt. Col. pips, the said pops being gazetted defense stores”.
NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, said while they are happy that their head of security has been granted bail, they continue to condemn the ongoing lawlessness in the country.
“While we’re happy to receive our brother back, we continue to condemn this ongoing lawlessness,” said Bobi.
‘Achileo has spent close to three months under illegal detention, and he leaves behind many other political prisoners. Every person of good conscience must condemn and fight this criminal conduct by the Museveni regime,” Bobi added.
Achileo, 42, was accused of being in possession of military attire. He was first arraigned in court in August before a panel chaired by Brigadier Robert Mugabe.
According to prosecution, Kivumbi was in possession of a pair of pips, reserved for UPDF Lieutenant Colonel, at his residence in Nansana East 2B Zone in Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.
Achileo is said to have been abducted by military officers on August 1, 2024. Later he was driven to his home and his house searched.
According to the certificate of search dated August 3, 2024, Kivumbi Achileo was found with a military cap and t-shirt, among other military stores.
