Daniella Atim, former wife of Ugandan music icon Jose Chameleone, recently took to social media to open up about her journey of resilience, perseverance, and self-reinvention after enduring years of domestic violence. Now living in Minnesota, U.S., Atim has marked five years since she left her tumultuous marriage and Uganda, revealing the difficult decisions that shaped her path toward healing and empowerment.

In an Instagram post, Atim, a mother of five, candidly shared her experience, hoping to inspire women facing similar hardships. “I mentally and emotionally checked out of my marriage in 2016 and began planning a safe exit,” Atim shared, expressing her decision to break free for herself and her children.

Atim’s 16-year marriage to Chameleone, once celebrated publicly, was ultimately marred by frequent conflicts and episodes of violence. After silently enduring the toll of domestic abuse, Atim decided to make a change, starting with a six-month exploratory trip to the U.S. in 2018. During this time, she began laying the groundwork for a new life with her children.

“I left without raising suspicion, told only my brother on the morning of the trip to avoid anyone talking me out of it,” Atim shared. This marked the beginning of a long but rewarding journey to freedom. Upon arrival, Atim took on various jobs, often working back-to-back shifts to support her children. “With my baby on my back, I worked odd jobs for months, waiting for legal authorization to work,” she recalled.

Adjusting to life in a new country was no easy feat, especially as a single mother raising five children alone. Her eldest child, now a pre-med student, often stepped in to help care for his siblings when she worked multiple shifts. Through resilience and determination, Atim gradually found stability, eventually enrolling her children in private schools and even purchasing a home in 2021.

One of her proudest moments came in 2023 when she secured a restraining order against her ex-husband, reinforcing her decision to leave her past behind. “This was about ensuring a safe environment for myself and my children,” Atim explained, highlighting her commitment to a peaceful life.

Atim’s story has resonated widely, with many women and public figures in Uganda and beyond showing support. Celebrities such as basketballer Flavia Oketcho and singer Sincere posted encouraging messages, while comedian Collins Emeka Bareija also drew attention to her post on Twitter.

Though some fans expressed mixed reactions, others admired Atim’s decision to share her story openly, despite the scrutiny it invited. “As a law student, I look up to you because you’re constantly fighting for justice,” wrote one commenter, underscoring the impact of her advocacy for justice and personal empowerment.

Atim is now focused on furthering her career in business as she works toward licensure, a new chapter she describes as “baby steps in the right direction.” With her sights set on a fulfilling future, Atim shared that she has recently allowed herself to “feel loved again,” embracing a fresh start and continuing her journey of healing.
