NUP Candidate Sultana Salim Raises Concerns of Harassment and Unfair Practices in Kisoro Woman MP By-Election
Sultana Salim, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate in the Kisoro Woman MP by-election, cast her vote at Kisoro New Taxi Park polling station at approximately 12:20 PM. Shortly after voting, Salim voiced serious concerns about irregularities in the election process, accusing security operatives of harassing her polling agents.
According to Salim, her agents have faced persistent intimidation and obstruction from security personnel at various polling stations, undermining their ability to monitor and report on the voting process effectively. She noted that these tactics are intended to interfere with the transparency of the election and diminish her party’s ability to ensure accountability.
“This is far from a free and fair election,” Salim stated, expressing her disappointment with the conduct of the by-election. “Our agents are being harassed, and this interference is compromising the integrity of the process. This election does not reflect the democratic values that we, as Ugandans, should strive to uphold.”
In response to these alleged violations, Salim announced her intention to file a formal petition with the Electoral Commission. She aims to bring attention to what she perceives as widespread injustices affecting the legitimacy of the election. Salim’s claims add to growing concerns voiced by members of the opposition and civil society groups who argue that the election environment in Kisoro has been marred by intimidation and lack of fairness.
Observers have noted that the Kisoro Woman MP by-election has seen increased scrutiny, with opposition figures like Salim questioning the conduct of security forces and electoral officials. This scrutiny has heightened tensions between NUP supporters and the ruling establishment, as accusations of biased treatment and voter manipulation continue to surface.
As the tallying of votes proceeds, Salim’s allegations are likely to intensify discussions around electoral reforms in Uganda. The NUP and its supporters argue that only a transparent and fair electoral system will ensure the voices of all Ugandans are genuinely represented. Salim remains committed to seeking justice, determined that her concerns will not go unheard in her pursuit of fair representation for the people of Kisoro.
This by-election serves as a litmus test for Uganda’s commitment to free and fair elections, with Salim’s challenge underscoring the ongoing struggle for electoral integrity and political freedom in the country.
