When Rev. Peace Nakayima walked across the stage at Massey College to receive the Social Innovation Award during the 8th Annual GOWN: African Scholars Awards, the room erupted in applause. The moment was more than a recognition — it was a celebration of a life devoted to service, leadership, and transformation.

Born in Uganda and now serving communities in Canada, Rev. Nakayima Muruya. Senior Pastor, Abundance in Christ Church.  carries her African heritage with pride and purpose. As CEO of Lampstand Residences, she has championed emergency shelter and vital support for marginalized populations, offering more than just housing — she offers hope, dignity, and a path forward. Her work reflects an unwavering belief that communities can be places where resilience and renewal are possible.

Her journey is nothing short of inspiring. With advanced degrees in French, German, public administration, project management, and Christian counseling, she has blended scholarship with service to create a holistic model of leadership. A senior pastor, mental health counselor, and Ontario Public Service professional, Rev. Nakayima has uniquely woven faith, governance, and compassion into every sphere of her work.

Accepting the award, she delivered words that resonated deeply with the audience:

“Social innovation is purpose-driven, people-centered, and faith-aligned. It is seeing people as precious, their potential as endless, and communities as places where hope can rise again. As Africans, we carry a radiant flame — of promise, of power, of purpose.”

The GOWN Awards, proudly sponsored by the University of Toronto Affinity Groups, Massey College, Manulife, and TD Insurance, celebrate African students, alumni, staff, and faculty whose contributions uplift communities across Canada and beyond. Clad in regal gowns and academic regalia, the honorees symbolize excellence, pride, and possibility.

Among this year’s recipients were trailblazers such as Catherine Kyakuhaire (Outstanding Recent Alumni Award), Dr. Shezadi Khushal (Community Development Award), Prossy Kiddu Namyalo (Emerging Academic Award), Dr. Binta Bajaha (Global Impact Award), Cindy Njoki Kamau Esq. (Distinguished Volunteer Award), Christopher Thompson (Distinguished African-Caribbean Award), and Dr. Alexie Tcheuyap (Distinguished Influencer Award).

Yet, the evening belonged to Rev. Nakayima. Her award affirmed what many already know: she is a beacon of innovation, compassion, and faith-led leadership. Her vision continues to inspire hope, empower the vulnerable, and remind communities on both sides of the Atlantic that transformation begins with purpose and people.
