Police officers and plain-clothed security operatives on Tuesday night launched an operation at a hotel in Lira City, northern Uganda, where National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, and his campaign team are staying.
NUP lawyer Benjamin Katana confirmed the development, saying: “It’s true, we are under siege.”
“They are breaking into their rooms,” Katana told ChimpReports.
Witnesses said the hotel’s receptionist was among those detained as officers moved from one room to another.
NUP officials suggested that the operation is targeting members of Bobi Wine’s campaign advance team, rather than the opposition leader himself.
As of press time, police were yet to comment on the development or explain the reasons for the search.
Bobi Wine has been in northern Uganda mobilizing supporters as part of his nationwide political activities ahead of the 2026 general elections.
