Makana Kennedy : Critic Detained at CPS for Demanding Court Access During Besigye Hearing

A government critic was arrested and taken to the Central Police Station (CPS) on Tuesday. The individual, known on social media as Comrade Makana Kennedy, was reportedly detained while demanding public access to the High Court.

The arrest occurred as veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye was being brought to court for a hearing on his long-pending bail application, which was ultimately postponed without a ruling.

Eyewitnesses and online reports state that Makana Kennedy was protesting what he and others perceived as restricted access to the courtroom during Besigye’s appearance. His detention, confirmed by police sources who spoke on background, was characterized by a swift and forceful removal from the court premises.

A social media post attributed to his account following the arrest declared: “Comrade @Makana_Kennedy has been driven off in a drone to CPS. His crime is demanding access to the High Court as Doctor @kizzabesigye1 was being brought to court… Time will come and breathing will be an offence in Uganda!”

Police authorities have not issued an official statement detailing the specific charges against him. However, preliminary information suggests he may face counts related to unlawful assembly, disrupting court proceedings, or incitement to violence.

Human rights advocates have swiftly condemned the arrest. “The right to observe court proceedings is a fundamental aspect of a transparent judiciary,” said a spokesperson for the Uganda Human Rights Network. “Detaining someone for demanding this access sends a chilling message about the state of civic space and due process.”

The incident has sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with the hashtag #FreeMakana gaining traction among activists and opposition supporters. They allege a pattern of using the police and legal system to intimidate and silence dissent, particularly in contexts related to Dr. Besigye’s prolonged legal battles.

The High Court’s failure to issue a bail ruling for Besigye, who has been in custody for over a year, has already drawn domestic and international concern. This latest arrest of a bystander at the courthouse adds a new layer to accusations that the state is constricting the democratic arena.

As of press time, Makana Kennedy remains held at CPS, with his legal representatives working to secure his release. The development highlights the ongoing and volatile intersection of law, politics, and public dissent in Uganda.
