Questions Mount Over Bobi Wine’s Whereabouts After Heavy Police Surveillance at Magere Residence

Fresh questions have emerged surrounding the movements of Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, after his party and supporters raised concerns about intense police surveillance at his residence in Magere following the end of the election campaigns.

According to accounts shared by members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and activists, Bobi Wine’s home had been under 24-hour security surveillance since the conclusion of the campaigns. Supporters say the presence of security forces was constant, with movements in and out of the residence closely monitored.

On Friday, however, the situation reportedly escalated. Individuals attempting to visit the opposition leader at his Magere home said they were chased away by police officers, who informed them that they were not permitted to see him at the residence. The incident, witnesses say, reinforced the belief that Bobi Wine was effectively under restricted access or de facto confinement.

These developments have now given rise to a central question being asked by supporters and observers alike: if the residence was under round-the-clock surveillance, how did Bobi Wine manage to leave, relocate, or “escape” police watch?

The Uganda Police Force has not yet issued a detailed public explanation addressing these claims or clarifying the nature and purpose of the reported surveillance. The lack of an official response has fueled speculation and intensified scrutiny from opposition figures and human rights advocates.

The episode comes amid heightened political tension in Uganda, where security deployments around opposition leaders have frequently drawn criticism from civil society groups and international observers. Analysts warn that opaque security operations and restrictions on political figures risk undermining public trust and further polarizing the political environment.

As calls grow for transparency, pressure is mounting on authorities to clarify what transpired at Magere, the legal basis for the police actions, and the current status of Bobi Wine’s freedom of movement. For now, the unanswered questions continue to dominate public debate both online and offline.
