Activist Sharon Kemigisha Disappears Amidst Abduction Wave in Uganda
Kampala, Uganda – 24.02.2024
In a development that has sent shockwaves through the activist community, Sharon Kemigisha, a renowned activist and Woman Councillor for Wandegeya, has been reported missing since yesterday evening. Her phones are switched off, and as her family and friends mobilize to find her, the ominous shadow of a new wave of abductions looms large.
Sharon Kemigisha’s disappearance joins a disturbing trend of prominent activists and dissenters being targeted and unlawfully detained or abducted. The latest disappearance follows the apprehension and detention of human rights lawyer Onyango Opondo, journalist Annet Namara, and opposition politicians Victor Bwire and Saviour Kizito.
In response to these allegations, the Ugandan government has denied any involvement, claiming that these individuals are being held for legitimate reasons. However, this narrative has been challenged by human rights organizations and concerned citizens both domestically and internationally.
The rising tide of harassment and detention of activists has raised serious questions about the state of democracy and human rights in Uganda. As the search for Sharon Kemigisha continues, calls for accountability and justice are growing louder.
The disappearance of Sharon Kemigisha serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who dare to speak out against injustice in Uganda. It underscores the urgent need for the protection of activists and the preservation of their rights to free expression and political participation.
As the situation unfolds, the world is watching, and the people of Uganda are calling for immediate action to ensure the safety and security of all activists. The time for accountability is now.
