Imane Khelif of Algeria secured a gold medal in women’s welterweight boxing (under 66kg) at the Paris Olympics, defeating China’s Yang Liu in a unanimous decision. Khelif’s victory, however, has been overshadowed by a gender controversy and a wave of online hate driven by misinformation.

In a thrilling bout held at the iconic Roland-Garros Stadium, Khelif dominated the first two rounds, with all judges scoring 10-9 in her favor. This early lead placed immense pressure on her opponent, Yang Liu, as they entered the final round. Khelif enjoyed overwhelming support from a pro-Algerian crowd, which undoubtedly boosted her morale as she clinched the gold.

Path to Gold: Khelif’s journey to the final saw her defeating Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng in the semifinals and Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori in the quarterfinals, showcasing her prowess in the ring.

Despite her success, Khelif has been embroiled in a gender controversy. She is one of two boxers, alongside Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting, who were previously banned by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after allegedly failing a gender test in 2023. The IBA’s decision to ban Khelif and Lin was met with significant backlash, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which oversees the boxing tournament in Paris, affirmed that both athletes met all eligibility criteria for women’s boxing.

Misinformation and Online Abuse: Khelif became the target of a widespread online attack after her victory in an early match where her opponent, Italian boxer Angela Carini, withdrew after just 46 seconds. Prominent figures, including Republicans, celebrities like J.K. Rowling, and Elon Musk, falsely insinuated that Khelif was transgender and had previously competed as a male. This narrative was entirely fabricated, as Khelif was assigned female at birth and has always competed in female boxing, including at past Olympic Games.

In an interview, Khelif expressed her desire for an end to the bullying she endured, hoping that future athletes would not have to face similar hostility. She emphasized the severe impact such attacks have on individuals’ dignity, highlighting the toll the false accusations and online vitriol took on her.

Khelif’s gold medal is a testament to her skill and determination, even as she faced challenges far beyond the boxing ring.
