Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has been re-elected unopposed as president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) during the party’s delegates conference held this Wednesday in Kavule, Kampala.
The musician-turned-politician, who has led NUP since its transformation from the former National Unity Reconciliation and Development Party (NURP) in 2020, retained the party’s top leadership position.
The development comes as the party prepares for the 2026 general elections.
Also re-elected unopposed was David Lewis Rubongoya, who continues as NUP Secretary General, a position he has held since the party’s rapid rise to prominence five years ago.
Bobi Wine’s renewed mandate formally positions him once again as President Yoweri Museveni’s main challenger in the 2026 polls.
In the last general elections held in January 2021, Kyagulanyi emerged as the strongest opposition candidate, garnering 35% of the vote according to official Electoral Commission figures.
Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986, was declared winner with 58%.
Challenges Ahead
NUP continues to face legal and administrative challenges, including arrests and detentions of its members, restrictions on public rallies, and internal divisions.
The government has accused the party of engaging in subversive activities — claims NUP officials dismiss as politically motivated attempts to suppress dissent.
Furthermore, the party faces the delicate task of consolidating its support across Uganda’s diverse regions beyond its strongholds in central Uganda and urban centers.
With voter registration expected to commence in the coming months, building effective grassroots structures while navigating restrictive political space will be critical.
Despite the challenges, Kyagulanyi remains a powerful symbol of generational change in Uganda’s politics. His rise reflects frustrations among Uganda’s youthful population — nearly 75% under the age of 35 — who face unemployment, poverty.
