Bobi Wine to Discuss Impact of Oscar-Nominated Documentary During Canada Visit
Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, will be visiting Canada to reflect on the profound impact of the Oscar-nominated documentary, “Bobi Wine: The People’s President.” This film, which was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2023 Academy Awards, captures Bobi Wine’s courageous fight against Uganda’s entrenched authoritarian regime under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during the 2021 general elections. The documentary has played a crucial role in bringing international attention to Uganda’s ongoing struggle for democratic reform.
Bobi Wine, a prominent musician, activist, and leader of Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP) and the People Power Movement, is slated to be the chief guest at the NUP Canada Convention 2024. The convention, themed “Challenges Of Democracy and How to Overcome,” will be held from August 16th to 18th across three Canadian cities: Ottawa, Edmonton, and Toronto.
- Press Conference: Bobi Wine will address the media at a press conference on Saturday, August 17th, at 2:00 PM. The event will take place at the Hilton Hotel, 145 Richmond Street West, Toronto, ON M5H 2L2.
- Football Match: In the evening of August 17th, Bobi Wine will participate in a football match, adding a touch of community engagement to his visit.
- Conference: The main conference will occur on Sunday, August 18th, where Bobi Wine will discuss the significance of the documentary and its role in showcasing the resilience of Ugandans in their quest for “A New Uganda.”
“Bobi Wine: The People’s President” provides an intimate look into Bobi Wine’s defiant stand against the authoritarian regime in Uganda. The documentary not only highlights the political struggles but also reflects the broader aspirations of millions of Ugandans striving for democratic governance and human rights. The international recognition and critical acclaim of the film have helped elevate global awareness of the challenges faced by Uganda.
Bobi Wine’s visit to Canada comes at a significant time. His previous engagements in Canada included a stop at Dominion Church International in Toronto, a refuge for African asylum seekers, including those fleeing Uganda’s repressive government. His current visit underscores Canada’s longstanding commitment to supporting refugees and human rights advocacy.
The visit also aligns with Canada’s historical legacy as a sanctuary for those escaping political persecution. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Canada’s resettlement of nearly 7,500 Ugandan Asian refugees expelled by Idi Amin’s regime in 1972. Bobi Wine’s visit serves as a poignant reminder of Canada’s ongoing role as a haven for those seeking freedom and democracy.
The NUP Canada Convention 2024 and Bobi Wine’s participation represent a critical moment for the Ugandan diaspora and their allies. The events are set to not only address the current challenges but also inspire continued efforts towards achieving democratic reforms in Uganda.

The very heart of your writing while sounding agreeable at first, did not sit very well with me after some time. Somewhere throughout the sentences you were able to make me a believer but only for a short while. I nevertheless have a problem with your jumps in assumptions and you might do well to fill in all those breaks. When you actually can accomplish that, I would definitely end up being fascinated.
