The Ugandan political landscape is reeling from the tragic death of Marinos Alexandros, a dedicated supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a vocal advocate for freedom, who passed away in the early hours of Sunday, August 17, 2025. Her death has been attributed to the severe physical and psychological toll of torture and sexual violence she endured at the hands of alleged state operatives. Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, confirmed the devastating news in a heartfelt statement, condemning the Museveni regime for its role in her suffering.

In a poignant mourning message shared on X, Bobi Wine expressed profound grief over the loss of Marinos, detailing the harrowing circumstances that led to her untimely demise. “It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the untimely passing of our dear comrade and friend, Marinos Alexandros,” he wrote. “Marinos was abducted on 30th March 2022 in Mbuya, subjected to incredible torture and raped by regime thugs at CMI, Mbuya. Her crime? Playing Bobi Wine’s music on loud speakers!”

Marinos’s ordeal began in March 2022 when she was abducted from her home in Mbuya, a suburb of Kampala, by suspected operatives of Uganda’s Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI). According to Bobi Wine’s statement, her alleged offense was playing his music, an act deemed subversive by the regime. The torture and sexual assault she endured left her with severe injuries and led to her contracting multiple illnesses, including HIV/AIDS. “When she came out and exposed the thugs, she started receiving calls threatening to kill her,” Bobi Wine recounted. “Her house was raided in the night by rogues, but she was not there that night, having slept at a friend’s home.”

Fearing for her life, Marinos fled to Nairobi, Kenya, seeking safety. However, her persecutors allegedly pursued her, attempting another abduction. This forced her to relocate to a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) camp, where she hoped to find protection. Despite these efforts, her health continued to deteriorate due to the trauma and illnesses she had endured. “Out of the abduction and torture ordeal, Marinos contracted several diseases, including HIV/AIDS,” Bobi Wine noted.

Last year, as her condition worsened, Marinos received medical treatment with support from Bobi Wine’s camp. The isolation and harsh conditions of the refugee camp prompted her to return to Uganda a few weeks ago to seek better care surrounded by family. Tragically, her body could not recover from the damage inflicted by her tormentors, and she passed away at 1:30 AM on August 17, 2025. “It is most unfortunate that we have lost her this morning,” Bobi Wine lamented. “Marinos joins hundreds of other victims of the Museveni regime of blood and terror.”

Bobi Wine’s statement also served as a rallying cry for the opposition, vowing to continue the fight for justice in Marinos’s memory. “Fight on, comrade! The struggle for freedom and democracy in Uganda is poorer without you, but the evil regime will never have the last laugh,” he declared. The NUP leader has consistently accused the Ugandan government of systematic brutality against dissenters, pointing to Marinos’s case as part of a broader pattern of abductions, torture, and extrajudicial killings targeting opposition supporters.

Marinos’s death has sparked renewed outrage among activists and human rights defenders, with many calling for an independent investigation into her abduction, torture, and subsequent death. Posts on X reflect the public’s grief and anger, with users like @One_PiusJadwar writing, “Comrade Marinos Alexandros, REST IN PEACE. You paid the highest price for freedom. Your blood waters the struggle, and your spirit lives on!” Another user, @DrMorgans01, emphasized her courage, stating, “We honor her courage in speaking” out about her ordeal.

The Ugandan government has not issued an official response to Marinos’s death, though it has previously denied allegations of human rights abuses, often dismissing such claims as opposition propaganda. However, international organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have documented numerous cases of state-sponsored violence in Uganda, lending credence to the opposition’s accusations.

As Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections, Marinos Alexandros’s death serves as a stark reminder of the high cost of dissent under President Yoweri Museveni’s regime, which has been in power since 1986. Her story has galvanized the opposition, with Bobi Wine and his supporters vowing to honor her sacrifice by continuing their fight for democracy and justice. “The blood of our comrades fuels our resolve to liberate Uganda from tyranny,” Bobi Wine stated, a sentiment that resonates deeply with those mourning Marinos’s loss.

Marinos Alexandros’s legacy as a martyr for freedom will endure, her courage inspiring countless others in the struggle for a free and democratic Uganda.
