Bobi Wine, leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a prominent opposition figure, delivered a powerful end-of-year address from his home in Magere, reflecting on Uganda’s challenging 2024 and presenting a hopeful vision for the nation’s future.

In his speech, Bobi Wine commended the resilience of Ugandans in the face of immense challenges posed by President Yoweri Museveni’s regime. “2024 reminded us of the urgent need for change,” he emphasized, highlighting critical issues such as economic despair, rampant corruption, mismanagement of national resources, and continued human rights violations.

The opposition leader recounted the year’s notable struggles, including widespread corruption scandals, soaring unemployment rates, and the increasing militarization of the state. He also shed light on political persecution, including the abductions of prominent figures like Dr. Kizza Besigye, forcibly taken from Kenya, and the tragic collapse of the Kiteezi landfill, which claimed more than 30 lives. Bobi Wine also decried the attacks on judicial independence that led Justice Esther Kisakye to flee the country, marking a dark chapter for Uganda’s legal system.

Amid these challenges, Bobi Wine celebrated the courage and determination of everyday Ugandans. “It is the resilience of our people that kept us going,” he said, emphasizing the collective strength of a nation striving to reclaim its dignity and build a future rooted in freedom, justice, and opportunity for all.

As the new year approaches, Bobi Wine urged Ugandans to renew their commitment to holding the regime accountable and pursuing justice. He expressed solidarity with political prisoners still detained, reaffirming the NUP’s demand for their immediate release.
