The Ugandan government has recently come under scrutiny for its alleged misuse of taxpayer money. According to a recent news report, the government purchased 70 SUVs from China to transport delegates during the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 (G77) + China Summits in January 2024 1. This move has been criticized by some citizens who argue that the government should prioritize the needs of ordinary Ugandans over those of foreign delegates.

The report further highlights that despite the government’s spending on the SUVs, there is a lack of funding for basic services such as healthcare and education. Patients are forced to sleep on floors in hospitals, children still study under trees, and there is a shortage of medicines in hospitals 1. This has led to widespread outrage among citizens who feel that their needs are being ignored by the government.

It is important for governments to prioritize the needs of their citizens over those of foreign delegates. While hosting international events can be beneficial for a country, it should not come at the expense of basic services for citizens. The Ugandan government should take steps to address the concerns of its citizens and ensure that taxpayer money is being used effectively.
