Former ITI President and Cultural Icon Jackson Ndawula Passes Away
The Ugandan arts community is reeling from the recent loss of Mr. Jackson Ndawula, a towering figure in the country’s cultural landscape. Mr. Ndawula served as the President of ASSITEJ (International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People) and Chairman of the Uganda Korea Cultural Friendship Association, playing a pivotal role in fostering cultural exchange and nurturing young talent. He was also a former President of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) Uganda and a distinguished writer, actor, and producer.
Mr. Ndawula passed away after a courageous battle with thyroid cancer, a diagnosis that deeply impacted his family and friends. His condition had escalated in recent months, with the mass from the tumor obstructing his airway and severely reducing his oxygen levels, necessitating immediate medical intervention. Despite the critical situation, Mr. Ndawula remained resilient, a reflection of the kindness, generosity, and strength he consistently displayed throughout his life.
Beyond his artistic contributions, Mr. Ndawula was a father to Edgar Watson CEO Fufa and Herby K A veteran Radio Host and Manager , a devoted family man who put others before himself. His kindness and dedication to his community were evident in his tireless efforts to support and uplift those around him.
The fight against cancer took a heavy toll, both physically and financially. The estimated cost of his life-saving surgery and treatment reached £15,000 (approximately 70 million Ugandan shillings), an overwhelming burden for his family. Radioactive iodine treatment, the recommended method for targeting thyroid cancer cells, was crucial to his treatment plan. However, the costs of this specialized care, including hospital admission fees of £650 per night, placed an enormous strain on the family.
Despite these challenges, the legacy of Mr. Ndawula will remain firmly rooted in Uganda’s arts and cultural heritage. His impact as a leader, mentor, and creative force will continue to inspire future generations. The Ugandan community mourns not just the loss of a remarkable artist, but also a man whose life was marked by compassion, dedication, and love for his people.
Rest in peace, Jackson Ndawula. You will be missed, but your legacy will endure in the hearts of those you touched. May the Good Lord strengthen your family during this time of immense grief.
