Germany Denies Adopting UK-Style Rwanda Deportation Scheme
Germany has firmly rejected claims that it is considering adopting a deportation plan similar to the UK’s scrapped Rwanda scheme, as UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reaffirmed the decision to abandon the policy. Reports out of Berlin suggested that Germany could utilize accommodation in Rwanda originally earmarked for Britain’s controversial plan, with the aim of deporting unauthorized migrants to the East African country.
However, Germany’s ambassador to the UK, Miguel Berger, pushed back against these reports, clarifying that while the country is examining ways to process asylum applications in third countries, this would be under a UN-backed system, not through deportation to Rwanda.
Germany Denies Rwanda Deportation Scheme
Ambassador Berger made the German position clear on social media, writing, “Let’s be clear, there is no plan of the German Government to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.” He further explained that the discussion is focused on processing asylum claims in third countries in accordance with international humanitarian law, and with the support of the United Nations.
The speculation about Germany’s interest in a Rwanda-style deportation plan arose after Joachim Stamp, Germany’s migration commissioner, suggested that the European Union (EU) could repurpose the Rwandan asylum accommodation initially prepared for the UK’s scrapped plan. This led to speculation that Germany could be considering a similar approach, but Berger’s comments appear to have put those rumors to rest.
Starmer Defends Scrapping Rwanda Plan
Speaking at a summit focused on tackling the small boats crisis, Prime Minister Starmer defended his government’s decision to end the Rwanda deportation plan, labeling it a “gimmick” that had cost the UK £700 million while only convincing four individuals to volunteer for deportation. “We’re going to use that money on operational matters,” Starmer said, emphasizing that the funds would be redirected to more effective measures.
Starmer also addressed the German government’s response to the reports, noting that Germany had “already cleared up” that they would not be implementing a Rwanda plan. He further stated that both Germany and the UK had concluded that such schemes would not work and instead pledged to focus on dismantling people-smuggling operations, which he said were the root cause of the migrant crisis.
“We’re going to concentrate on what works,” Starmer added. “That means taking down the gangs that are running this trade.”
While the UK government’s initial Rwanda plan was met with significant controversy, Germany’s approach seems to be aligned with broader international cooperation, especially under the aegis of the United Nations. The focus on processing asylum applications in third countries, rather than deportation, suggests that Germany is seeking a solution that adheres to international humanitarian law and avoids the contentious political landscape that the UK’s Rwanda plan encountered.
As both the UK and Germany continue to grapple with migration challenges, it is clear that solutions will require not only domestic action but also international collaboration. The question remains whether such UN-backed proposals will provide a sustainable answer to the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe.
