Hajjat Sophia Safina Kenyanji’s Pledge to the Muslim Community During Juma Prayers at Masjid Swidiq.”

In a strong demonstration of faith-driven leadership, Hajjat Sophia Safina Kenyanji, the National Woman Chairperson of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Women league and an aspiring Kampala Woman MP, reaffirmed her dedication to the Muslim community during Juma prayers at Masjid Swidiq in Mengo Kisenyi.
During the prayer gathering, Sheikh Ismael the Imam of Masjid Swidiq commended Hajjat Kenyanji for her unwavering support towards the Muslim community and urged her to remain steadfast in her commitment to development and faith as she embarks on her political journey. His remarks highlighted the increasing expectation among the faithful for leaders who integrate spiritual values into public service.
The mosque chairman, Hajj Mighdad Saad, praised Hajjat Kenyanji’s continuous contributions, particularly her support for Muslims during Ramadan and iftar provisions. He encouraged her to maintain this selfless approach once elected, unlike past leaders who drift away from their communities after securing positions. “We shall support you, but don’t disappoint us,” he emphasized.
Recognizing the significance of continuity in leadership, Masjid Amirat raised an important concern regarding her transition into active politics. As the current Women’s National Representative, Hajjat Kenyanji was advised to mentor and support a successor who will uphold the same values in serving the Muslim community.
In her remarks, Hajjat Sophia Safina Kenyanji emphasized that leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege, and that her journey of service began at Makerere University, inspired by her upbringing in a matriarchal family. She recalled how her father instilled the principles of fairness and responsibility by ensuring that she and her siblings received equal but distinct recognition. “These lessons shaped my approach to leadership to uplift others while ensuring fairness and representation for all,” she noted.
She also highlighted her recent advocacy efforts, particularly in ensuring economic policies align with Islamic financial principles. She revealed that during a high-level engagement on the Parish Development Model (PDM) with the president, she objected to the 6% interest rate imposed on Muslims. “Islam does not support interest-based financial transactions, and I raised this concern. I am pleased that the President agreed to review this, ensuring that instead of interest, a service fee will be applied, in line with Islamic teachings,” she stated.
As a demonstration of her commitment, Hajjat Kenyanji contributed UGX 500,000 towards the purchase of a prayer carpet for Masjid Swidiq and pledged to remain actively engaged in initiatives that promote faith and development. With the political landscape evolving, Hajjat Sophia Safina Kenyanji’s engagement with the Muslim community underscores her commitment to ethical leadership that prioritizes service over self-interest. Her track record of supporting religious and social causes speaks for itself, and she continues to champion policies that benefit not just Muslims, but all Ugandans. “My commitment to you remains strong.
Leadership is about amplifying voices, advocating for fair policies, and ensuring that no one is left behind. With your support, we will build a future where governance respects our values, our faith, and our community’s aspirations,” she concluded. As the 2026 elections approach, Hajjat Kenyanji’s promise to uphold integrity and faith-driven leadership sets a new benchmark for political engagement within Uganda’s Muslim community.
