Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, and other MPs have assured the people of Lwengo District that their MP, Cissy Namujju, will soon be released from prison. Among compared Namujju’s situation to a child who steals and returns home, implying that Namujju’s alleged corruption offenses will be forgiven.

Despite Namujju’s current remand status over corruption charges, Among expressed confidence in her innocence and capabilities as a leader. The assurance was made during the launch of the Ssentaayi Foundation in Lwengo District, where Among handed over a donation of Shs50m from President Museveni and his son.

The event was attended by various MPs, including David Kabanda and Juliet Ssuubi Kinyamatama. Reports suggest that at least 30 MPs will be investigated for their role in corruption scandals, with some already committed to trial.

Speaker Anita Among says Namujju was a diligent servant for the people of Lwengo District and was still interested in and capable of representing them in the 12th parliament. She even claimed that Namujju had sent her Lwengo voters her love from prison where she is on remand.

“I met with Hon. Namujju and she says she loves all of you and she is in good spirits. She will be with you and she is going to be your woman MP forever,” Among told the crowd.

She then sought to bring the president in the matter, which is already in court, blurring the principle of separation of powers. Speaker Anita Among also seemed to suggest that Museveni would forgive Namujju of her wrongdoing or perhaps push through a light punishment for her.

“The President has heard your cries where you said that when your child misbehaves, you beat and say go back and do something good,” said the speaker, before handing Muyanja a donation of Shs50m, said to have been from President Museveni and his son, also army chief, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Among’s remarks seemed to suggest that President Museveni would intervene in Namujju’s case, potentially leading to a light punishment or forgiveness.

However, this raises concerns about the separation of powers and the potential for political interference in legal matters.

Notably, Among herself faces corruption allegations and has been sanctioned by the US and UK.
