Ten individuals identified as supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have been remanded to Lira Government Prison following their appearance in court on charges related to an alleged attack on undercover police officers.

The accused are facing charges of robbery, malicious damage to property, and assault. According to the prosecution, the group is accused of robbing the officers of a laptop, a bag containing an unspecified amount of clothing, and 20 litres of fuel. The charges further allege that the supporters damaged a police vehicle during the incident.

The arrest and subsequent remand have intensified political tensions in the region, with the case drawing attention to the often-fraught relationship between opposition supporters and state security agencies.

Details presented in court allege that the incident occurred while the police officers were operating in an undercover capacity. The specific circumstances that led to the confrontation remain unclear, and the case file is still developing.

The ten suspects were produced before the Lira Magistrate’s Court, where the prosecution successfully applied for their remand, arguing that investigations into the matter were still ongoing. The magistrate granted the application, ordering the accused to be held in prison until a later date when the case will be mentioned again.

The NUP party, the main opposition political organization in Uganda, has yet to issue an official statement on the matter. However, the incident is likely to be viewed by its supporters and critics as part of a broader pattern of the criminalization of political dissent.

The case has been adjourned, and the suspects will remain on remand pending the progress of the police investigation. The outcome of this case is being closely watched, as it touches on sensitive issues of political activity, alleged criminality, and the conduct of security operations.
