Lord Mayor Lukwago Demands Removal of Muhoozi and SFC from Kampala’s Pothole Resolution
Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has taken swift action by calling for a crisis meeting with select members of the Authority executive to address his concerns and demand the termination of a road repair contract awarded to the UPDF’s Special Forces Command (SFC). Lukwago has expressed skepticism about the military engineering unit’s expertise and equipment for the task at hand.
At a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon, the Lord Mayor emphatically stated, “We want the SFC out of Kampala,” and directed his message to Lt. Kikomeko, urging him to return to the barracks. He further addressed Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president’s advisor on special operations, emphasizing that the military’s focus should be on securing the nation’s borders, an area where their expertise lies.
Lukwago’s concerns revolve around the recently awarded Shs. 2 billion contract given to the SFC’s Construction Regiment to address the issue of potholes in the central division, covering approximately 3 kilometers of road. Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, accompanied by SFC engineers and KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, recently inspected the ongoing road repair works in the city.
Despite the visit, the Lord Mayor expressed doubt about the preparedness of the SFC for such a task, stating, “They have no capacity; they have no equipment, we don’t even know how many engineers they have.” Lukwago believes there may be a smokescreen created to give the appearance of progress without the necessary resources.
In response to these concerns, Lukwago called for an urgent meeting with Eng David Luyimbazi, the KCCA Deputy Director, to seek accountability for the Shs 250 billion allocated to city road repairs and to gain clarity on KCCA’s involvement in the entire process. The crisis meeting aims to address the ongoing uncertainties and ensure transparency in the allocation of funds and execution of crucial road repair projects within Kampala
