MP Ssegirinya Released from Aga Khan Hospital After Six-Month Stay

Kawempe North MP Mohammad Ssegirinya has been discharged from Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, where he has been undergoing treatment.

The outspoken Ssegirinya had been admitted to the hospital for about six months.

“I have been discharged, and I am heading home. To my constituents, I assure you that everything is in order, and I am on my way back,” Ssegirinya said.

The MP’s personal assistant, Alex Luwemba, is confident about Ssegirinya’s recovery. He noted that the medical officers have recommended MP Ssegirinya take three months of bed rest under medical supervision before resuming any work-related activities.

“I want to inform Ugandans that Hon. Mohammad Ssegirinya has been discharged from Aga Khan Hospital after spending 186 days there. God is great,” Luwemba said.

Ssegirinya was diagnosed with skin cancer and other lung infections last year while in the Netherlands. Following two months of treatment at a Dutch hospital, Amsterdam Universitair Medische Centra, Ssegirinya returned home to Kawempe.

While in the Netherlands, he castigated the Parliament of Uganda for not taking care of his medical bills. This was after his bill shot to shs 80 million, which was unsustainable for him.

However, his recovery didn’t go smoothly, and he was rushed to Nsambya Hospital. While at Nsambya Hospital, he was given initial treatment and referred to Nairobi.

Ssegirinya shot to fame in the early 2010s due to his activism. Due to his activism, Hon Ssegirinya became a household name, launching his political career.

MP Ssegirinya’s woes

He started off as a Councillor in Kampala City. Following the singer-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi’s decision to join elective politics, Ssegirinya joined the artist’s campaign team. His exploits with the Kyagulanyi-led People Power movement led to Ssegirinya being elected in 2021 as MP for Kawempe North.

However, throughout that journey, Ssegirinya had been known as a jolly person who always cracked ribs with his submissions. That all changed just a few months into his first term in Parliament when he was arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder, and aiding and abetting terrorism in relation to the killings in Masaka and Lwengo districts in 2021.

Alongside Makindye East MP Allan Ssewanyana, the duo spent close to two years in Kitalya Prison. Following their release, Ssegirinya’s health became a concern.
