After months of negotiations, a coalition deal has been reached in the Netherlands, moving the country sharply to the right and significantly impacting migrants and refugees.

Dutch nationalist leader Geert Wilders and his far-right PVV party have formed a coalition government with three other right-wing parties—the VVD, the NSC, and the BBB. Despite leading the coalition, Wilders has ruled himself out from becoming the prime minister.

With a parliamentary majority of 88 out of 150 seats, this coalition plans to introduce the “strictest-ever asylum regime,” aiming to enforce stronger border controls and harsher rules for asylum seekers.

“Hope, Courage, and Pride” Agreement

The new government has titled its deal the “hope, courage, and pride” agreement, expressing its intent to opt out of the EU-wide migration pact, which will be finalized over the next two years.

“An opt-out clause for European asylum and migration policies will be submitted as soon as possible to the European Commission,” the coalition stated in its pact, even before officially starting its work.

Expected Opposition from the EU

Opt-out clauses and other amendments to the migration pact will be discussed in upcoming negotiations, but Wilders and his coalition are likely to face strong opposition from the EU. The European Commission has not yet responded to Wilders’ plans to opt out of the migration pact.

Far-Right Immigration Overhaul

Wilders announced that the incoming government’s immigration policy overhaul will make the Netherlands “less attractive for asylum seekers,” particularly targeting migrants from Africa and the Middle East. His rhetoric aligns with years of campaigning against migration into the EU, especially against Muslim migrants.

Wilders has positioned himself as an ally of other far-right and populist leaders in the EU, such as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, and French opposition leader Marine Le Pen.

Stricter Immigration Policies

The Netherlands has already adopted stricter immigration policies than its liberal reputation suggests, with new legislation ensuring more even distribution of asylum seekers across the country amid a housing shortage. However, Wilders and his coalition partners aim to further limit labor migration and reduce the number of foreign students admitted to Dutch universities.

The coalition also plans to scrap family reunifications for refugees and implement stricter rules for work visas. They believe non-EU workers should have specialized knowledge or expertise to obtain work permits.

Additionally, the coalition intends to reassess the EU’s freedom of movement principle, proposing that new EU members should not enjoy the same benefits. They have expressed strong opposition to further EU enlargement, despite efforts by other EU states to add countries like Ukraine to the bloc.

Concerns from Rights Groups

The Dutch Council for Refugees has voiced concerns over the new asylum measures, stating that the coalition’s package undermines core values held by many in the Netherlands. Chairman Frank Candel criticized the government for using refugees as scapegoats for broader social issues, such as the housing market crisis.

Stichting Vluchteling, another refugee charity, expressed disappointment on social media, saying, “We are not proud but ashamed by the lack of compassion for the most vulnerable in this agreement: men, women, and children fleeing persecution.”

Impact on European Elections

Wilders’ election victory and the formation of the coalition have implications for the upcoming European elections, with far-right parties expected to make gains. The European elections are scheduled for June 6-9.

The four-party coalition is set to present its political program to parliament on Thursday, with a debate expected next week. Despite potential opposition, the coalition is poised to form the next Dutch government, with Wilders already declaring that the “sun will shine over the Netherlands once more.”
