The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially kicked off its vetting exercise for Kampala flag bearers ahead of the 2026 general elections, starting with candidates from Lubaga North, Kawempe South, and Nakawa West.
The week-long exercise, taking place at the party’s headquarters in Makerere Kavule, is being led by the Election Management Committee in line with the schedule previously shared by the party.
In a show of support, Kampala Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Shamim Malende donated Shs10 million during the launch to support the party’s internal preparations.
“This donation is my contribution towards the transformation that NUP stands for,” she said.
The vetting exercise is part of a broader effort to identify credible, community-rooted leaders to carry the NUP flag in local government races, including LC3 and LC5 positions. It also forms part of a national fundraising drive initiated on July 9, 2025, through which NUP seeks to raise Shs9 billion for logistical and campaign support.
According to senior party member Hajj Latif Ssebagala, NUP’s flag bearer selection is guided by both internal evaluation and grassroots performance.
“NUP’s method is clear: 40% of the selection is based on internal vetting by the Election Management Committee, and 60% is determined by how candidates perform in the field,” he said.
The party has urged all candidates to demonstrate integrity, discipline, and readiness to serve.
