NUP Leader Bobi Wine Condemns Judiciary’s Role in Political Persecution and Calls for Judicial Reform
The leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Bobi wine , has issued a scathing critique of the judiciary, led by Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo, accusing it of complicity in the political persecution and eventual death of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya. In a detailed statement, [Your Name] reiterated accusations made during Hon. Ssegirinya’s burial, asserting that the judiciary and other conspirators bear responsibility for his untimely death.
Highlighting systemic failures, the NUP leader questioned the judiciary’s selective response to his comments while ignoring the long-standing public outcry against the trial of civilians in military courts. “Why have you found my comments deserving of a response but continue to maintain deafening silence about the ongoing public uproar against the trial of civilians in military tribunals?” asked, pointing to an appeal that has languished for four years without resolution.
The statement condemned the judiciary’s handling of high-profile cases involving opposition figures, including the remand of an ailing Hon. Ssegirinya for two years without bail, while NRM officials accused of corruption were swiftly released. “Isn’t it the same judiciary that remanded Kakwenza to prison instead of sending him to the ICU for emergency treatment?” Bobi wine asked, further criticizing the leniency shown towards government-aligned individuals.
Additionally, the NUP leader accused Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo of using his influence to thwart justice, particularly in the Supreme Court petition challenging the 2021 election results. “You abused your position and influence to deny the people of Uganda justice in the petition we filed…and persecuted the only judge who dared to challenge your orders,” the statement alleged.
Bobi wine called for an end to the trial of civilians in military courts and urged the judiciary to fulfill its constitutional duty of impartial justice. “Ugandans demand a judiciary that is consistent and impartial… That is not much to ask,” the statement concluded, urging the Chief Justice to restore trust by upholding the rule of law.
The statement reflects growing frustration among Ugandans over perceived judicial partiality and calls for urgent reforms to ensure fairness and justice for all, regardless of political affiliation.
