NUP Leaders Meet Police in Naguru to Resolve Public Activity Deadlock
National Unity Platform (NUP) officials, led by Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi and Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, arrived at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, on Monday morning for a crucial meeting with the police. The meeting aims to resolve the ongoing deadlock over NUP’s public activities. The police have accused the opposition party, led by Robert Kyagulanyi, of not complying with public order management protocols.
Despite NUP joining other political parties in a consultative drive, police have repeatedly obstructed their activities. Last Wednesday, a planned rally in Kamuli was foiled, with several supporters arrested, and on Thursday, attempts to hold a rally in Pallisa were thwarted at Sezibwe Bridge. NUP maintains that they had informed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of their meetings, but their efforts have been met with resistance. Following the Kamuli incident, Ssenyonyi and other officials delivered a second letter to Naguru, seeking resolution, but police have yet to relent.
