As the National Unity Platform (NUP) prepares for its upcoming mobilization tour in Bundibugyo District, reports of significant challenges have surfaced. According to party representatives, local authorities, including Lt. Col. Alex Nzirimu, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), and the District Police Commander (DPC), are actively disrupting their efforts under ambiguous ‘orders from above’.

The NUP alleges that yesterday, an attempt to promote their upcoming event was thwarted when authorities intercepted the party’s mobilization drive. The driver was reportedly threatened with arrest for merely publicizing the event. Additionally, local radio stations were barred from airing any announcements related to the NUP’s activities, despite prior financial arrangements made by the party for airtime.

Compounding the restrictions, the NUP had secured Booma Grounds for their event, a venue historically open to all political and community gatherings. However, the DPC has now issued a directive, purportedly based on higher orders, to relocate the event to a site over 30 kilometers away from the central town area.

The NUP has expressed vehement opposition to these actions, labeling them as “illegal and criminal,” and symptomatic of a regime fearful of engaging with the populace. The party insists on the legitimacy of their programs and has called on local officials not to impede their lawful activities.
