The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially launched a fundraising campaign to support its efforts in the upcoming 2025/2026 presidential elections. The initiative aims to mobilize resources from supporters both locally and in the diaspora to fund what the party has described as a “protest vote” campaign.
According to the NUP’s president, the fundraising drive comes in response to increasing obstacles in securing traditional funding sources, which they claim have been deliberately blocked in a bid to cripple their electoral preparations.
Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, President of NUP, said, “For the past few months, we had been receiving funding in accordance with the law. However, as you’re aware, a new law was recently passed clearly designed to target the National Unity Platform.”
He further added that, “The regime knows that the money we receive from Parliament is not for personal luxury, but rather to empower our struggle to dismantle this corrupt and criminal system.”
NUP leadership says the move is intended to empower citizens to take ownership of the democratic process and push back against what they term as growing political repression. Kyagulanyi contributed Shs 10 milllion as part of the drive.
According to Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, Leader of the Opposition, “The funds we are raising for the campaign focused on the protest vote are not about removing President Museveni directly. Rather, they are meant to help us take the necessary steps to transform the situation we find ourselves in.”
Ssenyonyi contributed Shs 10 million.
Others to have contributed include Joyce Bagala (Shs 3 million), Erias Nalukoola (Shs 10 million), Allan Ssewanyana (Shs 15 million) and singer Nina Rose (Shs 5 million) among other contributions.
The funds raised will go toward the production of key campaign materials, including T-shirts, posters, billboards, and banners. Additionally, resources are being allocated for media outreach, such as television and radio advertisements, to boost public engagement and visibility.
Mobilization activities across various communities are also a top priority, ensuring that the campaign reaches grassroots supporters effectively.
The party has not yet disclosed its fundraising targets but says it will rely heavily on digital platforms, community events, and diaspora networks to raise the necessary resources.
