Playboi Carti Channels Early 2000s Smack DVD Style in New Video
Playboi Carti has released a new video that pays homage to the early 2000s Smack DVD series, featuring a soundtrack by Biggie Smalls.
The Atlanta rapper, adopting the persona “Baby Boi,” shared the clip on Instagram on Tuesday (January 9). The video is shot in the style of the popular Smack DVD series, known for showcasing emerging talent in the rap scene during the early 2000s.
In the video, Carti, dressed in a red du-rag and showing off his belt buckle and rings, sits in the backseat of a car alongside a rapper named “SexIsDeath.” The nighttime shoot mimics the Smack DVD style, with the only light coming from the camera. The video logo, ‘King Smack Some.com,’ is a play on the original Smack logo.
Emulating the energy of up-and-coming rappers featured on Smack DVDs, Carti, as Baby Boi, shouts into the camera, exclaiming, “Get my belt, bitch. What! What! Yeah, pretty boy shit. I ain’t even got no haircut. What’s happening! And I’m here with my girl SexIsDeath, man. You know what time it is! Future millionaires!”
The release of the video comes shortly after footage of Playboi Carti’s 2022 speeding arrest surfaced. In the bodycam footage obtained by YouTube channel Raq Rarest, the rapper is seen being pulled over for driving at over 130 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. The video captures the police officer questioning Carti about the excessive speed, with the rapper explaining that he had an emergency.
This new video and the speeding arrest footage follow Playboi Carti’s arrest in 2022 on charges of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend. The rapper’s attorney later stated that the case would be dismissed without prosecution, and Carti has not publicly commented on the speeding arrest.
