The U.S. State Department has urged the Ugandan government to launch a thorough investigation into the recent stabbing of a well-known LGBTQ+ activist Steven Kabuye. The attack has sent shockwaves through the international community, raising concerns about the safety and rights of marginalized groups in Uganda.

Steven Kabuye known for he’s unwavering advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda, was attacked in a public space and sustained serious injuries. The incident, which has been widely condemned by human rights organizations, is believed to be linked to the pervasive anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment prevalent in the country.

In a statement, the State Department emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights of all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. “We strongly urge the Ugandan government to conduct a swift and transparent investigation into this violent attack and to hold those responsible accountable,” the statement read.

The attack comes in the wake of increased hostility towards the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda, following the passage of the country’s controversial Anti-Homosexuality Act. The legislation has been criticized for its draconian measures that criminalize same-sex relationships and stigmatize LGBTQ+ individuals.

Rights activists have long warned that such laws encourage violence and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. They argue that politicians and religious leaders in Uganda have created an environment of fear and hatred through their inflammatory rhetoric, making LGBTQ+ individuals targets for violent attacks.

The State Department has also called on the Ugandan government to repeal the discriminatory law and to adopt policies that protect the rights of all citizens. “Human rights are universal, and they must be protected. No one should live in fear because of who they are or who they love,” the statement added.
