New administration rolls back diversity initiatives and narrows gender recognition policies, drawing sharp criticism from human rights advocates.

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at dismantling federal programs promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), while also rolling back protections for the transgender community. The order, which critics describe as a direct attack on human rights, mandates significant changes to federal policies and forms, effectively erasing recognition of non-binary and transgender identities.

One of the most controversial provisions requires government agencies to revise forms and policies to narrow gender categories, eliminating options for individuals who identify as non-binary or transgender. This move has sparked widespread condemnation from LGBTQ+ advocates, who argue that it denies the existence and rights of transgender and non-binary individuals.

Additionally, the executive order halts DEI training and recruitment initiatives within the federal workforce, labeling these programs as “divisive.” It also calls for the elimination of affirmative action policies, diversity initiatives, and racial equity projects, which the administration claims are discriminatory.

Human rights organizations have strongly criticized the order, emphasizing its harmful impact on marginalized communities. “This is not just a policy shift; it is a direct attack on our human rights,” said a spokesperson for Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights (@RFKHumanRights). “At RFK Human Rights, we remain steadfast in our commitment to defending the rights of all individuals. We will not back down in our fight against these damaging actions, and we will continue to ensure that every person, regardless of their identity, is treated with the dignity, equality, and respect they deserve.”

The executive order marks a significant departure from previous administrations’ efforts to promote inclusivity and protect the rights of marginalized groups. Advocates warn that the policy changes could have far-reaching consequences, exacerbating discrimination and inequality in the federal workforce and beyond.

As the Trump administration moves forward with its agenda, human rights organizations and activists are gearing up for a prolonged battle to defend diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals. The fight for equality, they say, is far from over.
