Many African countries maintain strict laws against same-sex unions, often enforcing harsh punishments that include lengthy prison sentences and, in some cases, the death penalty. Countries such as Nigeria and Uganda are known for aggressively implementing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, further intensifying the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.

Beyond these legal restrictions, cultural and religious beliefs play a significant role in perpetuating prejudice. Many African societies hold conservative views on gender and sexuality, often viewing homosexuality as taboo and a violation of cultural and moral norms. In many communities, LGBTQ+ individuals face social exclusion, harassment, and violence.

In both Christian and Muslim societies, religious leaders frequently denounce homosexuality, contributing to the societal stigma. Despite these obstacles, there is a growing movement of LGBTQ+ activists and allies across Africa advocating for change.

International pressure and support are also contributing to increasing tolerance. Global human rights organizations and foreign governments regularly condemn anti-LGBTQ+ laws, as seen in the case of Uganda’s recent anti-gay legislation.

However, widespread discrimination against homosexuality persists in most African countries, where legal repercussions remain severe. According to a BBC report, 64 countries worldwide criminalize homosexuality, nearly half of them in Africa.

“Some countries, including several in Africa, have recently moved to decriminalize same-sex unions and improve rights for LGBTQ people. But there are countries where existing laws outlawing homosexuality have been tightened, including Nigeria and Uganda,” the report notes.

Here are the 10 African countries with the longest maximum prison sentences for homosexuality, based on data from the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA). Of Africa’s 54 countries, 30 criminalize consensual same-sex sexual acts, and in some areas, the death penalty remains a possibility.
