Canadian-based Ugandan activist and human rights defender Ntege Lubwama Williams has publicly expressed support for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to suspend USAID funding to Uganda and other African nations. Williams, a permanent resident of Canada and a victim of President Yoweri Museveni’s regime, is leading a group of Ugandan activists in a peaceful demonstration in Ottawa.

The event is scheduled for February 6, 2025, from 11 AM to 3 PM, beginning at Parliament Hill and concluding at the U.S. Embassy on Sussex Street under the guidance of federal police. The activists will officially deliver a letter to the U.S. Ambassador, thanking the U.S. government for its stance against corruption and human rights violations in Uganda.

Why This Protest Matters

The activists argue that President Museveni’s administration has long misappropriated foreign aid, particularly funds from agencies such as USAID, UKAID, the IMF, and the World Bank, meant for development, healthcare, and humanitarian programs. Many of these funds, they claim, never reach the intended beneficiaries but are instead funneled into corruption networks controlled by high-ranking government officials.

Williams emphasizes that Uganda’s human rights record has deteriorated significantly under Museveni’s rule, with political oppression, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, and suppression of free speech becoming commonplace. He hopes that other Western nations will follow the U.S. in cutting financial support to Uganda’s government until meaningful democratic reforms take place.

The activists believe that their voices, amplified by media and the international community, will pressure the U.S. and other global powers to take stronger action against Museveni’s corrupt regime.
