Uganda’s Honorary Consul to Mumbai Lauds Uganda Cancer Institute’s Progress

Madhusudan Agrawal, the Honorary Consul of Uganda to Mumbai, India, recently visited the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) and was deeply impressed by the substantial investments made by the Ugandan government in this vital healthcare facility and the remarkable achievements it has accomplished.

Agrawal, during his tour of the Uganda Cancer Institute, was accompanied by the former Prime Minister of Uganda, Ruhakana Rugunda. Their visit to the UCI was undertaken with the specific purpose of assessing the impact and effectiveness of the Mammogram Van, a valuable contribution that the Indian Consul had generously donated to the Institute in 2019.

The Mammogram Van has been an invaluable asset in providing breast cancer screening services to underserved and remote areas of Uganda, ensuring that more individuals have access to early detection and treatment. This donation has had a significant and positive impact on the fight against cancer in Uganda, and it is emblematic of the strong relationship and cooperation between Uganda and India in the field of healthcare.

During the visit, Agrawal was not only impressed by the work that the Uganda Cancer Institute had undertaken with the Mammogram Van but also recognized the pressing need to expand cancer screening services to include other critical areas of the body. As a result, the Indian Consul has pledged to provide an additional mobile screening unit, which will focus on the detection of cancers affecting the head, neck, and chest.

This new mobile cancer screening van will play a pivotal role in extending the reach of cancer screening services across Uganda, particularly in areas where access to healthcare facilities is limited. By focusing on the early detection of head, neck, and chest cancers, this initiative aims to improve the survival rates and overall health outcomes of individuals affected by these cancers.
