Uganda’s Military Leadership Crisis: Nepotism Over Merit
Opinion by Alexander Luyima
Uganda has once again found itself at the center of international embarrassment due to the reckless and arrogant behavior of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The most recent tweet from Mr. Museveni’s son, openly defying Parliament and branding its members as “clowns,” is not only a blatant disregard for democratic institutions but also a slap in the face to all Ugandans who expect professionalism, discipline, and respect from their leaders.
The question Ugandans must ask themselves is this: How did Muhoozi—a man with a history of erratic tweets, controversial statements, and no proven track record of leadership that respects democracy—rise to become the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF)? Is it merit or simply his proximity to power as the son of Mr. Museveni?
In the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), there are numerous senior officers with years of distinguished service, unmatched training, and deep respect for the institution and the citizens it protects. Officers like Maj. Gen. Leopold Kyanda and many others have earned their positions through merit and have demonstrated the discipline expected of military leaders. Yet, instead of appointing any of these capable individuals, Uganda’s military leadership is handed to someone who seems more interested in stirring controversy on social media than defending the country.
This blatant nepotism has far-reaching consequences:
1. Erosion of Discipline in the Army: How can the rank and file respect an institution whose leadership is based on family ties rather than competence?
2. International Humiliation: Muhoozi’s constant outbursts tarnish the image of the UPDF and Uganda as a whole, portraying us as a nation ruled by entitlement rather than principle.
3. Citizen Disenfranchisement: Ugandans continue to feel alienated from their own institutions, watching as a small circle of family members and friends benefit at the expense of the majority.
I now pose these questions to my fellow Ugandans:
Do you believe Muhoozi Kainerugaba deserves to lead the Ugandan army, or do you think there are better-trained and more disciplined officers who should take his place?
How do we, as a nation, move forward when key institutions like the army are reduced to tools of nepotism and self-preservation?
I urge all Ugandans to demand accountability. Tag and recognize the senior officers in the UPDF who have the competence and discipline to lead with dignity. Let us highlight their achievements and call for an end to this disgraceful cycle of entitlement.
This is not about Muhoozi as an individual; it is about the future of our beloved country. Uganda deserves leaders who put the nation first—not their egos, not their families, and certainly not their social media fame.
It’s time for Ugandans to speak up. Share your thoughts and tag the names of capable officers who should lead the UPDF with integrity. Let’s reclaim the dignity of our nation.
