Fred Nyanzi, the Chief Mobilizer of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has finally returned home after being missing for four days. His release, however, has raised more concerns than relief, as he was found in a frail state, unable to clearly articulate what happened to him during his detention.

According to NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, Nyanzi was dumped near his residence this evening by unknown individuals. His physical condition and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance have fueled suspicions that he was subjected to mistreatment while in custody.

Nyanzi’s abduction came amid heightened political tensions, with increasing cases of opposition figures being arbitrarily detained. His disappearance sparked outrage among NUP supporters and human rights activists, who demanded his immediate release and an end to politically motivated arrests.

Despite his return, many unanswered questions remain. Nyanzi’s inability to recount his ordeal raises fears of possible torture or other forms of inhumane treatment, a pattern that has been reported in past cases of enforced disappearances involving opposition members.

The NUP leadership has condemned the abduction and called on the government to take responsibility for its actions. “This cycle of abductions and unlawful detentions must stop. Ugandans deserve justice and respect for their rights,” Ssenyonyi stated.

As calls for accountability grow louder, pressure is mounting on authorities to respect the rule of law and ensure the safety of political activists. The fate of many other missing opposition members remains unknown, fueling further concerns about the state of human rights and democracy in Uganda.
