In an exclusive visit to Uganda, the LGBTQ+ coordinator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) underscored the U.S. government’s commitment to promoting and defending human rights, especially amidst the challenging climate for LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda. The visit, which took place under heightened security, aimed to assess the situation on the ground and discuss strategies to support the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

The coordinator met with local activists, civil society organizations, and human rights defenders to gain firsthand insights into the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals due to the recent passage of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act. This law, which has drawn international criticism, criminalizes same-sex relations and has heightened discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in the country.

During the meetings, activists highlighted the significant barriers they face, including increased violence, discrimination in accessing healthcare, education, and employment, and a pervasive atmosphere of fear that hinders the community’s ability to live freely and safely. The USAID coordinator emphasized the importance of supporting local advocates and highlighted USAID’s continued support for initiatives that promote inclusivity, equality, and the protection of fundamental rights.

The coordinator’s visit also served as a platform for reaffirming the U.S. government’s stance against laws and policies that criminalize individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. USAID emphasized its commitment to working closely with international partners and local stakeholders to address these challenges through advocacy, diplomatic engagement, and targeted assistance.

The visit comes amid rising global condemnation of Uganda’s anti-LGBTQ+ policies, with international organizations and human rights groups urging the Ugandan government to reconsider its legislation. The presence of the USAID LGBTQ+ coordinator demonstrates a clear signal that the international community remains vigilant in monitoring Uganda’s human rights situation and will continue advocating for justice and equality for all.
