A coalition of youth activists led by Thomas Bagonza and Alex Luwemba has formally petitioned the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), highlighting widespread violations against peaceful protesters in recent demonstrations. The group has issued a four-day ultimatum, threatening to stage a protest at the commission’s premises if their demands are not addressed.

The petition was officially received by Alex Bukumunhe, the Public Relations Officer of the Uganda Human Rights Commission. The activists’ demands include an immediate investigation into reported abuses by security forces and the implementation of measures to protect the rights of individuals participating in peaceful protests.

In their petition, Bagonza and Luwemba outlined several key issues:

  1. Excessive Use of Force: The activists allege that security personnel have used excessive force against protesters, including arbitrary arrests and physical assaults.
  2. Illegal Detentions: They claim that many protesters have been detained without due process, with some held beyond the legally permissible time without formal charges.
  3. Violation of Rights: The petition emphasizes that the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, guaranteed under Uganda’s constitution and international human rights law, has been violated.

The activists argue that these actions undermine democratic freedoms and call for urgent intervention by the Uganda Human Rights Commission to hold those responsible accountable and prevent further abuses.

“We are here to ensure that our voices are heard and that the human rights of all Ugandans are respected,” said Thomas Bagonza. “If our demands are not met within the given timeframe, we will be forced to escalate our protest to the commission’s premises to draw attention to these grave injustices.”

Alex Bukumunhe, while acknowledging receipt of the petition, assured the activists that the commission would review the concerns raised and take appropriate action. “We take these matters seriously and are committed to addressing any violations of human rights. We will ensure that the issues are investigated and appropriate measures are taken,” Bukumunhe stated.

The ultimatum set by the activists has heightened tensions and drawn attention to the ongoing conflict between the government and civil society groups advocating for greater transparency and accountability. The outcome of this petition could influence future actions by both the authorities and protestors, as well as impact the broader discourse on human rights and governance in Uganda.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Uganda Human Rights Commission to see how it responds to the activists’ demands and whether it will take decisive steps to address the issues raised.
