45 Suspects Apprehended by Police at Nyege nyege Festival

The police have issued a report on the recently concluded Nyegenyege festival held at the Source of the Nile in Jinja from the 9th to the 12th, attracting over 1000 attendees from both within and outside the country.

During the weekly security press briefing in Naguru, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga shared details on how their team effectively managed the event, including the Busoga royal dinner.

Enanga assured the public that both the Nyegenyege festival and the Royal dinner in Busoga concluded peacefully despite security alerts and concerns raised by the US Embassy and the British High Commission.

However, Enanga confirmed the arrest of several individuals involved in criminal activities during the event, particularly those engaged in phone snatching. He reported a total of 20 cases of mobile phone theft, 3 cases of security and organizer impersonation, 5 minor fire outbreaks, 3 cases of marijuana possession, 1 motor vehicle theft, and 12 cases of possession of false tickets. A total of 45 suspects were arrested, with 10 issued police bonds, and arrangements are underway to arraign the remaining 35 in court.

The police expressed appreciation for the vigilance demonstrated by attendees and well-wishers during the festival. Enanga also thanked the organizers for their substantial efforts in preparing for the events, noting that effective security measures deterred potential disruptions and addressed concerns from certain countries. The police successfully secured the event, ensuring its smooth conclusion.
