The National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s main opposition party, claims involvement in the recent UK sanctions imposed on Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and former ministers Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu due to corruption allegations.

Robert Kyagulanyi, NUP’s principal, asserted that he and other advocates for change have been consistently reporting on parliamentary corruption, particularly regarding the mismanagement of relief materials intended for the Karamoja region. The UK government imposed sanctions on Among, Kitutu, and Nandutu following their alleged mishandling of relief iron sheets.

“These sanctions are the result of our consistent engagement and efforts, as well as those of other change-loving Ugandans,” Kyagulanyi stated. He expressed satisfaction that the international community, particularly the UK, is taking action against corruption in Uganda.

A UK government document, published on April 30, cited that “Anita Annet Among, while Speaker of Parliament of Uganda and Member of Parliament for Bukedea District, has been involved in serious corruption.” Both Nandutu and Kitutu are currently facing court proceedings related to the alleged theft of relief iron sheets.

In response to the sanctions, Among and the two former ministers suggested they were targeted due to their support for Uganda’s recent anti-LGBTQ legislation. However, Kyagulanyi dismissed these claims, emphasizing that the sanctions are purely a response to corruption. “Such claims are unfounded. If the anti-gay law was the issue, then Asuman Basalirwa, who introduced the bill, would also be sanctioned,” he added.

Kyagulanyi further urged the West to address the issue of enforced disappearances, noting that many people have gone missing following Uganda’s 2021 elections. “We’ve reached out to numerous international organizations regarding those who were abducted during the last elections, and we hope the authorities are held accountable,” he said.
