Uganda Removed from AGOA Due to Human Rights Violations
As of January 1, 2024, Uganda is no longer eligible for trade benefits under the Africa Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) in the United States due to severe human rights violations committed during President Kaguta Museveni’s administration 1. The decision was made based on the results of the annual AGOA eligibility review, which found that Uganda had committed gross violations of internationally recognized human rights 1.
Clinton Mirrors Ampaire, a human rights activist in Uganda, has encouraged the Ugandan leadership, especially President Museveni and his group, to respect human rights at all costs. Clinton also celebrated the United States for removing Uganda from AGOA, as this could help President Museveni and his regime understand that the people of Uganda deserve the right to make decisions of their choice. Clinton believes that it is important to raise awareness about human rights violations and advocate for change. You can also encourage the Ugandan government to take steps to address the human rights concerns raised by the United States 1. It is essential to ensure that human rights are respected and upheld in Uganda and around the world.
