JKL Dolphins Set to Clash with Rwanda’s APR in FIBA Zone V Women’s Championship Quarterfinals

The JKL Dolphins, reigning champions of the women’s National Basketball League, are set to face Rwanda’s APR (Armée Patriotique Rwandaise) in the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIBA Zone V Women’s Championship at 6 PM today.

In the group stage, the Dolphins encountered a mixed bag of results across their four games in group D, landing them in third place but securing their spot in the top 8.

The team showcased an impressive performance against Sudan-based Nile Legends, clinching a resounding victory of 84-30, with Ritah Imanishimwe leading the charge, recording 12 points, three rebounds, and four steals.

Their second game, against Kenya Ports Authority, proved more challenging, resulting in a 72-82 loss. However, the Dolphins regrouped swiftly and dominated Tanzania’s J.K.T Stars, securing a convincing win of 89-41, fueled by a remarkable performance from Evelyn Nakiyingi, who contributed 17 points, 5 points, and 5 assists.

Despite their strong efforts, they narrowly fell to Rwanda’s REG (Rwanda Energy Group BBC) with a close score of 65-66.

To secure a place in the last 4, the 2019 Zone V Champions will face Rwanda’s APR in their next encounter.

The JKL Dolphins aim for a stronger performance, especially after their previous match against a team from Rwanda. Their roster has been bolstered by the addition of Rose Amaniyo (KIU Rangers), Martha Soigi (KCCA Leopards), and Shakirah Nanvubya (UCU Lady Canons), aiming to fortify their chances in the tournament.

The 2023 FIBA Zone V Women’s Championship features nine clubs from six countries, including two teams from the hosts, Rwanda—APR and REG. Additional participants are Vijana Queens and JKT Stars from Tanzania, Nile Legends from South Sudan, Kenya Ports Authority and Equity Bank from Kenya, and Gladiators from Burundi.

The top three teams in the championship will secure qualification for the 2023 FIBA Africa Women Championships scheduled to take place in Egypt from December 8 to 17.
