50 Cent Discloses Original Plan to Feature Trina on Hit Track, “Magic Stick,” but Substituted Lil Kim Instead
In a recent interview with Apple Music during his Final Lap Tour in London, 50 Cent revealed his initial intention to collaborate with Trina on the hit track “Magic Stick.” However, due to complications with Trina’s involvement, he ultimately enlisted Lil Kim to feature on the 2003 song.
According to 50 Cent, “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” initially comprised 20 songs, leaving no room for “Magic Stick,” which was originally penned for the album. Expressing his disappointment with Trina’s performance on the record, 50 Cent explained, “I wrote that record to intentionally work with Trina. I sent it to Trina, and they messed up the record.”
Recognizing the potential of the song, 50 Cent recounted how Gee Roberson intervened, expressing the need for Lil Kim to take over. “She had made a good record but it didn’t have the formula that Biggie created for her to have success in our culture,” 50 Cent explained. “It didn’t have the sexuality. But ‘Magic Stick’ was spot on for her.”
Produced by The Fantom of the Beat, “Magic Stick” was released in April 2003 as Lil Kim’s second single from “La Bella Mafia.” Despite initially being left on the cutting room floor for “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” the raunchy anthem climbed to No. 2 on the Hot 100, narrowly missing the top spot due to JAY-Z and Beyoncé’s “Crazy In Love.”
In the interview, 50 Cent also confessed that “Many Men” was his least favorite song from “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” when the album debuted in 2003. He explained that, at the time, the track’s slower tempo stood out against the prevalent boom-bap phase in music. However, the song’s producer, Six Figga Digga, countered 50 Cent’s claim, stating that the song’s unique tempo was intentional and part of the album’s diverse sound.
