Following JAY-Z’s vocal criticism of the Recording Academy’s treatment of Beyoncé at the Grammy Awards, her father, Mathew Knowles, has added his perspective to the discourse.

In an interview with TMZ, Knowles pointed fingers at Beyoncé’s record label, suggesting that Columbia Records’ favoritism towards artists like Adele might have hindered her chances at Album of the Year wins.

“People don’t know the process,” Knowles stated. “Your record label can only appoint one person in a category, so that means her record label. I’ma call you out, Columbia Records. Her record label has never really put her in that category for consideration.”

Knowles highlighted the complexities of industry dynamics, including financial considerations and global record sales, which could have influenced the label’s decision-making process in favor of artists like Adele.

When corrected about Beyoncé’s multiple Album of the Year nominations, Knowles emphasized the importance of both the Grammys’ voting system and the label’s promotional efforts in determining nominees and winners.

“It’s a combination of all, but it starts with the label,” Knowles asserted, drawing from his extensive experience in the music industry. “I know exactly how this works.”

Knowles also touched upon the racial dynamics within the industry, alluding to the broader issue of representation and recognition of Black artists in mainstream awards ceremonies.

Meanwhile, JAY-Z used his acceptance speech for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the Grammys to address the ongoing disparities, specifically mentioning Beyoncé’s overlooked Album of the Year wins despite her record-breaking Grammy haul.

“We want y’all to get it right,” he emphasized. “At least get it close to right.”
