Bobi Wine Applauds U.S. Sanctions Imposed on Ugandan Government Officials
Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, the principal of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has publicly expressed his contentment with the sanctions that have been imposed on some Ugandan government officials.
US has continued sanctioning government officials ever since the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023. The recent sanctions didn’t spare Uganda Prisons Boss Johnson Byabashaija, who was accused by the US government of being party to torturing prisoners.
Byabashaija joins a long list of government officials, including speaker Anita Among, who were earlier sanctioned by the US and their visas cancelled.
NUP boss Bobi Wine, who has only recently been lifted from a travel ban to the UK, is happy with the sanctions coming in from the US government. Bobi Wine said in a post on his social media accounts that he welcomes the decision.
“We welcome the decision of the US Government to sanction Gen. Museveni’s officials, who have engaged in gross human rights violations, including torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings,” he said.
Bobi added that he is glad the cry of Ugandans is being heard by the world and that the sanctions are a reminder that there will always be consequences to those who abuse human rights.
“We’re glad that the cry of the people of Uganda is being heard by the world. The travel restrictions as well as sanctions under the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) are a good reminder that there will be consequences to those who abuse rights with impunity – especially now that Uganda’s institutions have been captured and are unable to hold them to account,” he added.
However, while speaking at the end of year prayers held at State House Nakasero during the weekend, President Museveni said he is not scared by the sanctions being imposed on his people, saying that the US government is wasting time.
