Bobi Wine Celebrates Release of NUP Security Head Achileo Kivumbi, Condemns Regime’s Lawlessness
National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Bobi Wine, has expressed his relief and joy over the release of Achileo Kivumbi, the NUP Security Head, who was granted cash bail of 2 million shillings by the General Court Martial. Kivumbi, who had been abducted in a violent manner on August 1st, spent nearly three months in illegal detention, facing torture and incommunicado treatment.
After being held for days without communication, Kivumbi was forcibly taken to his residence by state operatives who planted military equipment, specifically military pips, as witnessed by onlookers. This was followed by his arraignment before the military court, where he was charged with the unlawful possession of military equipment.
Despite welcoming their comrade back, Bobi Wine and the NUP leadership continue to condemn what they describe as “ongoing lawlessness” under President Museveni’s regime. Kivumbi’s release, while a temporary relief, highlights the oppressive tactics that continue to be used against political opponents in Uganda.
“We are happy to have our brother back,” Bobi Wine stated, “but we cannot ignore the fact that Achileo has spent close to three months under illegal detention. His release comes as a reminder that many of our comrades remain unjustly imprisoned. This behavior from the regime must be condemned by anyone with a sense of justice.”
The NUP has been vocal in its opposition to the criminalization of its members and the increasing suppression of political dissent. According to Bobi Wine, Achileo’s case is one of many, where opposition figures are harassed, detained without cause, and charged under dubious pretenses.
Bobi Wine called on Ugandans and the international community to stand in solidarity against the actions of the Museveni government. He urged citizens of good conscience to continue resisting and speaking out against the regime’s authoritarian practices.
Kivumbi’s ordeal is not unique, and his release, though a victory for the NUP, brings to light the numerous political prisoners still facing the regime’s heavy-handed tactics. NUP remains committed to fighting for justice, human rights, and the release of all political prisoners in Uganda.
