As the world celebrates World Press Freedom Day, Ugandan politician Joel Ssenyonyi has emphasized the urgent need to empower and protect journalists in Uganda. Recognizing the crucial role of the press in promoting democracy and accountability, Ssenyonyi called for an end to the threats and violence that journalists face in the country.

He pointed out that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy and that journalists should be allowed to carry out their work without fear of persecution or intimidation. Ssenyonyi urged the government and society to create an environment that supports free and independent journalism, enabling reporters to investigate and report without undue pressure.

Reflecting on the difficulties faced by journalists, Ssenyonyi highlighted the increasing cases of harassment, arrests, and violence against media personnel. He stressed the importance of upholding the rights of journalists to protect freedom of speech and ensure that they can report on critical issues affecting the country.

In light of recent events, including the passage of restrictive laws and the arrests of journalists, Ssenyonyi’s call to action comes at a crucial time. He urged authorities to uphold their commitment to press freedom, emphasizing that empowering the media is essential to ensuring transparency, democracy, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
