A section of legislators has called upon all Ugandans to speak out against the continued detention of former presidential contender Dr. Kizza Besigye, whose health is reportedly deteriorating while in Luzira prison. The MPs argue that his ongoing imprisonment under harsh conditions is a violation of human rights and a dangerous precedent that could affect any Ugandan.

Dr. Besigye, a long-time government critic and opposition leader, was arrested and charged in the General Court Martial alongside Haji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya for allegedly possessing firearms and ammunition reserved for the armed forces. Despite a Supreme Court ruling that military courts cannot try civilians, he remains in detention, sparking public outrage and calls for his immediate release.

Legislators have emphasized that Besigye’s critical health condition requires urgent medical attention, which they say cannot be adequately provided in prison. They insist that if he has a case to answer, it should be handled by a civilian court in accordance with the law.

“The continued detention of Dr. Besigye, despite the Supreme Court ruling, is not just a legal issue—it is a matter of life and death. We cannot sit back and watch as one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures is denied his fundamental rights,” one MP stated during a press briefing.

The MPs urged Ugandans to amplify their voices through protests, petitions, and social media campaigns to pressure the government into complying with the court’s ruling and allowing Besigye to receive proper medical care.

Meanwhile, government officials have maintained that the legal process is ongoing, with Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Faruk Kirunda stating that steps are being taken to transfer the case to civilian courts. However, opposition leaders argue that the delay is politically motivated and meant to weaken the opposition movement.

With growing concerns over Besigye’s health and increasing public pressure, the coming days could be pivotal in determining his fate. For now, the call for justice and medical intervention continues to gain momentum across the country.
