Justice Lydia Mugambe’s trial in the UK is more than just a courtroom drama—it is a glaring reflection of the corruption and decay within Uganda’s foreign missions. While the case itself is shocking, it is hardly surprising given the history of scandals that have plagued Ugandan embassies worldwide.

For years, Ugandans have voiced concerns about embassy officials engaging in visa fraud, human trafficking, and financial mismanagement, yet the government has done little to clean up these institutions. Instead of diplomats representing Uganda’s interests abroad, many embassies have become safe havens for corrupt officials, political loyalists, and even criminal enterprises.

The involvement of Uganda’s Deputy High Commissioner in the UK in this case raises an urgent question: how deep does the rot go? If top diplomats are allegedly complicit in human trafficking, then Uganda’s foreign service is no longer just incompetent—it is criminally corrupt.

Beyond the embassies, this case also tarnishes Uganda’s judicial system. A High Court judge, supposedly a guardian of justice, now stands accused of modern slavery. How can ordinary Ugandans trust a legal system where those meant to uphold the law are themselves entangled in human rights abuses?

The Ugandan government must face this scandal head-on. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should be held accountable for appointing unqualified, corrupt officials. President Museveni’s administration must explain why political loyalty is prioritized over professionalism in diplomatic appointments. And most importantly, Ugandans—both at home and in the diaspora—must demand real reforms, not just empty promises.

If Uganda does not act now, this will not be the last time a top official stands trial in a foreign court. The world is watching, and so are the Ugandan people.
